August 2, 2011 HSDS Happenings!All HSDS classes are every Sunday at the Melody Club. Click here to view our weekly class schedule. We offer lessons for beginner to advanced dancers. No partner necessary! Our weekly Sunday dance is 8:30-10:30pm following the lessons and is open to everyone! Two Jazz Nights in August at Miller Outdoor Theater Get your toes tappin' to music from Fats Waller at the Miller Outdoor Theater on Friday, August 12th 8:30-10:30pm. The Tony Award-winning musical that honors the legacy of Fats Waller comes to Miller. Song after song, complete immersion into a time when every woe and joy was best expressed in song. This is a free ticketed event for the covered seating area and as always, free open seating on the hill.On August 27th, The National performing Artists, Conrad O.Johnson Regional Youth Orchestra shares the spotlight with The Shellman, jazz great trombonist Steve Turre of Saturday Night Live in "A Tribute to the Big Band Era: Igniting The Flame; Passing The Torch". The exciting show will feature original compositions and arrangements by our late Founder, Conrad O. Johnson, as well as other big band greats, such as Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington. HSDS at the House of Blues on August 23rd We're just getting word that the Houston House of Blues Foundation Room will be having a special swing night on August 23rd, 7:30-10:30pm. HSDS will be there to offer a special membership promotion. There will be a live band, drink specials and a special event menu! We'll keep you updated at hsds.org with more details as they come.Save the Date for Houston's Harvest Moon Ball Mark your calendars for Houston's Harvest Moon Ball a celebration to honor the spirit of dedicated dancers in Houston! This year's Harvest Moon Ball will be held October 22nd, 2011. Houston's Harvest Moon Ball is a collaboration of two dance groups HSDS and the Rice Social Dance Society. It's a night to wear your sharpest clothing and dance the night away with great live music, performances, just-for-fun dance competitions and more!
We're currently working on the band and will post information as it becomes available! Tickets will be $20. Beginner lesson will be provided at 7pm and the dance will be at 8pm-midnight. Swing Out of Town!Ale

This event is full of great live music and exciting dancing. Austin, TX - Austin Lindy Exchange - October 18-20th, 2011. Austin is home to one of the best lindy exchanges in the world. Ever. We have a thriving dance scene with lindy hop, blues, balboa and shag. We have amazingly talented djs and even more talented musicians. We have a bunch of fun activities and sites to see.

Don't worry if you can't remember the days when there were the "style-wars" of lindy hop. It was all settled peacefully when some swing club made the ironic t-shirts, "I dance (fill in the blank) style." Now we can benefit from learning about and incorporating different styles and techniques into our lindy hop. Join us Sunday's at 7:30pm for the August elective and learn about what made
