Do I need a partner?
No, partners are not necessary. Lindy Hop is a social dance, so all of our classes are taught in a circle or lines that rotate and allow you to dance with everyone in the class.
How much are the classes?
Progressive classes (level 1,2, etc.) are $80 for the month (includes all Sunday social dances).
Social dances only (no progressive classes) are available for $15 per Sunday and include the 30-minute drop-in class.
What is the difference between the progressive class and the drop-in class?
The level 1 and 2 Lindy hop progressive classes and solo jazz classes are designed to introduce students to a wide variety of topics over about 9 months to a 1 year. The drop-in classes teach quick and easy material to get everyone on the dance floor!
It’s week 3 or 4, can I still attend a class?
The drop-in class is the best place to be! Progressive courses do not offer mid-month registration.
How do I know which class to join?
In order to join Level 2 Lindy hop, we ask that you complete each of the Level 1 topics (which will take about 3 months) and this will cover 6-count, 8-count, and Charleston. If you learned your basics elsewhere, you can check in with a teacher and join a Level 2 class. If it’s mid-month, it’s best to join the drop-in class right before the social dance.
How do I become a member?
Anyone can become a member by registering for classes. We do not collect annual dues anymore.
How much is it if I want to come to the dance?
Sunday night social dances and first Saturdays Groove and Glue cost $15.
Can my Mom, Dad, brother, sister, or friend watch the class or the dance? Can I bring my child?
Our dances are a social event, and we think just because you may not be dancing, you'll be having a good time, therefore, we ask everyone to pay under normal circumstances. Chaperones are allowed on an individual basis, and kids are always free unless they are interested in joining the class.
What should I wear to class?
We do not have a formal dress code and encourage everyone to show up however they are most comfortable! Many people dress casually, often in jeans and T-shirts, and some people dress nicely in slacks, skirts, or dresses. Dress to your comfort level and you’ll have no problem.
As for shoes, they are important and a very personal decision! We recommend wearing comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Something you can move around in. The rubber soles of some sneakers can be sticky, but many people choose sneakers. High heels can leave you unbalanced, but dance heels are a great option for many, but not required.
Where can I find out where everyone else is dancing?
Houston has a welcoming dance scene, and you can often find HSDS members out dancing during the week. There are tons of events and groups on Facebook, as most organizing happens there. Be sure to check out the Houston Lindy Hop Community as events are cross-posted there. We try to list HSDS-sponsored events in our newsletter, and you can also find out where people are dancing through our Facebook page as well!
Who is HSDS?
While our lead coordinator of HSDS and Lindyfest is Alesandra Bull, HSDS is a completely volunteer-run organization, from the instructors, DJs, and front desk attendants. We volunteer because we love Lindy Hop! We work hard to bring you fresh classes, electives, dances, workshops, and special events, but we can’t do it alone. HSDS is always looking for people who are interested in sharing their valuable time, effort, or skills to further the quality of HSDS.
